Membership provides us with essential ongoing financial support, allowing us to host events, publish original Torah, and organize our communities. 

Membership also allows us to be accountable to the broader Halachic Left community rather than relying on large donors.

Finally, being a member of Halachic Left helps us make a statement that there is a community of traditionally observant Jews who care deeply about and demand equality for Jews and Palestinians.

You can pay dues monthly or yearly according to your preference, for as little as $5 per year — though we encourage you to give an amount that feels meaningful to you.

Halachic Left's mission is to organize within traditionally observant Jewish communities. What matters most to our organizing strategy is communal embeddedness — that you're part of a community that is halachically observant and holds you accountable to shared practice. While halacha encompasses all aspects of life, our main heuristic for defining "halachically observant" is Shabbat observance, i.e. abstaining from melakhot for twenty-five hours from Friday sundown through Saturday nightfall. Concretely, this means being part of a community where most people don't cook, write, travel, or use electronics (etc.) on Shabbat, your shul isn't livestreaming services or using musical instruments, and most people live within walking distance of each other. We welcome those who don’t fit this description to support Halachic Left as allies.

Sliding scale & suggested contributions

Membership dues at Halachic Left are on a sliding scale. You choose your own amount, starting at just $5/year. Gifts of any size are welcome, but for those who can give more, we invite you to give at a level that feels meaningful to you and helps sustain our shared work. Below is a suggested sliding scale, with the caveat that we know costs of living vary geographically, and that living an observant life carries added expenses not reflected by income alone.

  • If your individual income is below $30k: suggested dues are $5/month, or $18/year.

  • If your individual income is $31-60k: suggested dues are $6/month, or $36/year.

  • If your individual income is $60-100k, suggested dues are $12/month, or $108/year.

  • If your individual income is above $100k: suggested dues are $36/month, or $400/year.

  • If you are giving from wealth: suggested dues are $100/month or a larger annual gift.
